Superfood Smoothie Bowl

It seems to be a hot new trend to pour a super thick smoothie into a bowl and sprinkle delicious toppings on..maybe because it feels like you're indulging in an ice-cream sundae! Not only is this a totally satisfying breakfast or snack, it's also a great way to get in your super foods. 

Smoothie Base:  

1 banana

1 cup of frozen raspberries 

1 cup of coconut water 

1 scoop of chocolate protein powder 

1 tbsp. of coconut oil 

1 big handful of torn kale or spinach leaves 

Combine everything in a high powdered blender until smooth. Pour into a bowl and place in the freezer for 15- 20 minutes. 

Optional Superfood Toppings: 

Chia seeds: Chia seeds are an excellent source of fibre, protein and omega-3. They are a wonderful seed to sprinkle on soups, salads, or use in place of eggs when baking. They have an amazing ability to soak up liquid and turn into a gelatinous substance.. doesn't sound great but think of all the toxins they soak up in your system as they move through! 

Hemp Seeds: Hemp seeds have a mild flavour and can easily be added into recipes for a creamy texture. They are an incredible source of plant based protein, omega-3 and we love that they are harvested here in Canada. 

Coconut: Coconut oil and coconut flakes not only add a deliciously rich flavour, but coconut is also  a natural anti bacterial and anti fungal helping to kill of candida fungus in the body or viruses. It's medium chain fatty acids provide a burst of usable energy and may even help to boost metabolism.  

Dark Chocolate: The main ingredient in dark chocolate- cacao is very high in antioxidants shown to reduce blood pressure and help protect the body against oxidative damage. Plus.. it's just delicious. I used Zimt Peppermint Bar made with very little low glycemic coconut sugar.
